Cranberry Cobbler Punch (Thanksgiving Punch)

Every holiday gathering needs a signature drink, and this thanksgiving punch is the one your guests will remember.

It’s a big, beautiful bowl of ruby-red punch made with tart cranberry juice, sweet apple cider, a homemade spiced cranberry syrup, bourbon, orange liqueur, and a bubbly splash of champagne. Floating orange slices, cinnamon sticks, and star anise make it look as festive as it tastes.

Not drinking, or serving kids? There’s a full mocktail version too, with spiced cider, orange juice, a touch of vanilla, and sparkling grape juice or ginger beer. Same gorgeous color, same cozy flavors, no alcohol.

It takes just 15 minutes to put together, and you can make it up to 4 days ahead, which is a lifesaver during the busy holiday season.

What Is a Cobbler?

Before it was a dessert, a cobbler was a drink. Cobblers were hugely popular in the 1800s: a spirit or wine mixed with sugar, fruit, and lots of ice. This punch borrows the idea, mixing fruit syrup, juice, and spirits, and scales it up into a big-batch party drink for the holidays.

Ingredients You’ll Need

For the cranberry syrup (both versions)

  • Water (½ cup / 120 ml)
  • Maple syrup (¼ cup / 60 ml)
  • Brown sugar (¼ cup / 50 g)
  • Fresh cranberries (2 cups / 200 g): Frozen also work.
  • Cinnamon stick (1)
  • Orange zest (from 1 large orange)

For the punch (with alcohol)

  • 100% cranberry juice (6 cups / 1.4 L): Or cranberry-pomegranate juice.
  • Apple cider (2 cups / 475 ml): Non-alcoholic, unfiltered apple cider (see note below).
  • Bourbon (1 cup / 8 oz / 240 ml)
  • Orange liqueur (⅓ cup / 3 oz / 90 ml): Such as Cointreau, Grand Marnier, or triple sec.
  • Orange bitters (2 dashes)
  • Orange (1, sliced)
  • Cinnamon sticks (4)
  • Champagne (1 bottle, 750 ml), chilled: Or prosecco.
  • Star anise: For garnish.

For the mocktail

  • 100% cranberry juice (6 cups / 1.4 L): Or cranberry-pomegranate juice.
  • Spiced apple cider (3 cups / 710 ml): Non-alcoholic.
  • Orange juice (⅓ cup / 80 ml)
  • Orange bitters (2 dashes, optional): Bitters contain a small amount of alcohol, so leave them out for a completely alcohol-free drink.
  • Vanilla extract (1 teaspoon)
  • Orange (1, sliced)
  • Cinnamon sticks (4)
  • Sparkling white grape juice or ginger beer (2 cups / 475 ml), chilled
  • Star anise: For garnish.

Important Note About “Apple Cider”

In the US, apple cider means fresh, unfiltered, non-alcoholic apple juice. In the UK and much of Europe, “cider” usually means an alcoholic drink. For this recipe, use cloudy, unfiltered apple juice (or American-style apple cider), not hard cider.

Ingredient Tips

Cranberry juice: Use 100% cranberry juice, not “cranberry juice cocktail.” Pure cranberry juice is tart, so the homemade syrup balances it with just the right sweetness.

Spiced cider: Unsweetened spiced apple cider adds extra warmth, but regular cider or cloudy apple juice works too.

Bourbon swaps: Vodka works if you prefer a cleaner flavor, or spiced rum for extra warmth.

How to Make Cranberry Cobbler Punch

Step 1: Make the cranberry syrup

In a small saucepan, combine the water, maple syrup, brown sugar, cranberries, and cinnamon stick. Bring to a boil over high heat, then boil for about 5 minutes, until the cranberries start to burst.

Take the pan off the heat and stir in the orange zest. If the syrup thickens too quickly, stir in a splash more water.

Step 2: Cool and strain

Let the syrup cool completely. Strain out the cranberries if you’d like a smooth punch, or leave them in for a more rustic look.

Step 3: Mix the punch base

With alcohol: In a large pitcher, combine the cooled syrup, cranberry juice, apple cider, bourbon, orange liqueur, and bitters. Stir well.

Mocktail: In a large pitcher, combine the cooled syrup, cranberry juice, spiced apple cider, orange juice, bitters (if using), and vanilla. Stir well.

Step 4: Add the spices and chill

Add the cinnamon sticks and 1–2 star anise pods. Cover and refrigerate until you’re ready to serve. The longer it chills, the more the spices infuse.

Step 5: Add the bubbles and serve

Just before serving, fill a punch bowl with ice. Pour in the punch base, then add the champagne (or sparkling grape juice or ginger beer for the mocktail). Stir gently and add the orange slices.

Fill glasses with ice, ladle in the punch, and garnish with sugared cranberries, an orange slice, or a cinnamon stick.

How to Make Sugared Cranberries

These sparkly cranberries make a gorgeous garnish:

  1. Soak fresh cranberries in a little maple syrup for 10–15 minutes.
  2. Drain, then toss them in granulated sugar until coated.
  3. Spread on a tray and let dry for about 1 hour.

They look frosted and festive, and the sugar stays on even when they’re floating in the punch.

Tips for the Best Holiday Punch

  1. Chill everything. Cold juice, cider, and champagne keep the punch refreshing.
  2. Add the bubbles last. Pour in the champagne or sparkling juice right before serving so it stays fizzy.
  3. Make the base ahead. The flavors get even better after a day or two in the fridge.
  4. Use big ice. Large ice cubes, or an ice ring, melt slower and won’t water down the punch.
  5. Taste and adjust. Add more syrup for sweeter punch, or more cranberry juice for tarter punch.
  6. Serve two bowls. At family gatherings, put out the boozy and mocktail versions side by side, clearly labeled.

Make an Ice Ring

For a showstopping punch bowl, freeze an ice ring the day before. Fill a bundt pan with water or cranberry juice, add cranberries, orange slices, and rosemary sprigs, and freeze. It keeps the punch cold for hours, and it looks stunning.

Easy Variations

  • Prosecco instead of champagne: It’s lighter, fruitier, and often cheaper.
  • Vodka instead of bourbon: A cleaner, crisper flavor.
  • Pomegranate: Use cranberry-pomegranate juice and garnish with pomegranate seeds.
  • Spicier: Add a few slices of fresh ginger to the syrup.
  • No cranberries in the syrup: Skip them and make a simple maple-cinnamon syrup instead.
  • Rosemary garnish: Add a fresh rosemary sprig to each glass for a wintry look.

Make Ahead and Storage

Make ahead: Mix the punch base (everything except the champagne or sparkling juice) up to 3–4 days ahead. Keep it covered in the fridge, then add the bubbles and orange slices just before serving.

Cranberry syrup: Make it up to 1 week ahead and store it in a sealed jar in the fridge.

Leftovers: Store leftover punch in a covered pitcher in the fridge for up to 2 days. It will lose its fizz, so top it up with fresh champagne or sparkling juice before serving again.

How Much Punch Do I Need?

One batch makes about 13 cups (just over 3 liters), or roughly 10 servings. A 1-gallon (4 L) drink dispenser or punch bowl fits it perfectly. Plan on about 2 drinks per guest for a 2–3 hour party.

What to Serve with It
